Facilities:
Enhancing the future

Now that most of the Port's post-9/11 security improvements have been completed, Port Everglades is continuing to advance development projects designed to enhance the efficient movement of cargo, as well as cruise passengers, through Florida's fast-growing seaport. Here are some of the most notable developments:

Master plan update

Looking to the future, the Broward County Port Everglades Department has retained the services of DMJM Harris, a nationally recognized engineering, planning and economic analysis consulting firm, to prepare a comprehensive, five-year Master Plan Update, and 10- and 20-year Vision Plans.

DMJM Harris experts are working with Port customers to assess changes that have taken place regionally, nationally, internationally and at the Port since 2001, which is when Port Everglades presented its original 2020 Vision Master Plan. Also being considered are changing business trends and adjustments that have resulted in the post-9/11 environment, plus methods for furnishing additional environmental safeguards through structural considerations and operational practices. Recommendations from international energy consultant Purvin & Gertz Inc.'s study of the Port's petroleum facilities are being incorporated as well.

Cruise terminals

Making way for larger cruise ships - carrying an increasing number of cruise passengers and their luggage - Port Everglades is expanding baggage areas in several terminals.
At Passenger Terminal 4, designer CH2M Hill and contractor Moss Construction Managers are working on expansion of the baggage hall and a redesign that will facilitate terminal access from its west side. When completed the $9.6 million project will have nearly tripled the overall size of Passenger Terminal 4, to 76,000 square feet from its current 26,000 square feet.

Plans are being formulated to expand the baggage halls in Passenger Terminals 18 and 19.

Passenger Terminal 21, which was renovated and expanded in 2001, is undergoing a second expansion to enlarge its baggage hall. The general engineering consultant, Craven Thompson & Associates, Inc., is providing the design along with Master Plan Update considerations. The $4.5 million project, which also includes roadway modifications, is set for completion for the 2009/2010 cruise season.

Signage program

Port Everglades has contracted with Craven Thompson & Associates, Inc. and F.R. Aleman & Associates, Inc., to develop an effective wayfinding signage system to help cruise passengers and port users find their way through the Port. The goal is to integrate various types of signs - electronic, fixed and highway - to assist passengers and keep traffic running smoothly.
