Port Everglades is going bananas - literally.
Broward County's seaport is a leading U.S. import
point for bananas, with Chiquita Brands International
Inc. and Dole Fresh Fruit Co. relying upon the Port
for bringing the popular fruit to U.S. markets from
Central America.
Chiquita's 81,000-square-foot warehouse and ripening
and distribution facility handles more than 30,000 containers
of bananas a year, and, due to ever-increasing
demand, a facility expansion is in the works. Chiquita
holds an exclusive contract for banana supply with
Florida-based grocery giant Publix Super Markets Inc.
In addition to bananas, Dole brings such fruits as
pineapples, plantains and melons into Port Everglades.
Port officials are looking to further expand Port
Everglades' produce presence. Such efforts have included
a daylong program, in conjunction with the Port's leading
shipping line, Crowley Maritime Corp., through which
dozens of fruit and vegetable growers from Nicaragua
received a first-hand look at why the Port is an ideal place
for bringing produce to U.S. markets.
The Port and Crowley also are working together on
programs to spur the flow of agricultural products into
Port Everglades from the Dominican Republic.
Also streaming into Port Everglades is South American
produce, including asparagus imported by three carriers
from Peru and Ecuador.
